Founded in 2017, the Alliance for Transportation Electrification (ATE) is a trade association dedicated to expanding safe, dependable, affordable, and accessible electric transportation technology through innovations in electric utility regulatory policy and utility services.

Our Priorities

Represent the Big Tent

Electric transportation is about much more than the cars and trucks, it's about charging infrastructure, utility services, software development, component manufacturing, policy making and regulatory design. We bring all these components together to develop holistic, collaborative solutions that expand access to charging infrastructure and make for better consumer experiences.

Focus on the Charging Experience

EVs run on charging infrastructure and building more charging infrastructure that is accessible, reliable, affordable, and easy to use is essential to increasing consumer confidence. That’s why we are dedicated to fostering a strong utility role in transportation electrification and streamlining the pathway to design, install, interconnect, and energize charging infrastructure across the grid.

Promote Open Standards

The EV industry is evolving rapidly, with competition for growing demand spurring constant innovation in everything from batteries and vehicle design to vehicle charging speeds and smart charging software. We bring industry together to foster collaboration on open standards that ensure that with these innovations, no consumers are left behind and no business assets are left stranded.

States Must Lead the Way

From vehicle incentives and transportation infrastructure planning to electric utility regulation and rate design, the marketplace for electric vehicles and the consumer experience of owning an EV is determined by state level policies. That’s why we focus on engaging and informing state policy-makers and utility regulatory commissions on the best practices to serve and protect rate payer interests and foster economic growth through transportation electrification.

Our Policy Principles

  • Seek continuous improvements to create a reliable, affordable, and enjoyable experience including utility electric vehicle (EV) programs and charging infrastructure that have a strong customer-centric focus;
  • Accelerate EV adoption and the deployment of EV charging stations beyond current levels so that they are ubiquitous and afford equitable access;
  • Advocate for a strong utility role that is appropriate for each State and its regulatory structure and market conditions;
  • Build a robust cross-sector approach with multiple sectors and stakeholders, such as automobile and truck OEMs, fleets, software and hardware EV providers, and NGOs;
  • Continue to promote the use of open standards and protocols, and ensure that interoperability is designed into EVs, supporting software, and charging hardware.

Mission Statement

The Alliance for Transportation Electrification, or ATE, is a broad and diverse coalition of organizations that advocate before state and provincial decision-makers for an acceleration of transportation electrification. The Alliance believes that a multi-stakeholder coalition educating customers about the many benefits of transportation electrification is vital for success. Electric vehicle (EV) programs should be designed in a way to advance a reliable, equitable, and satisfying charging experience for the residential EV owners and business and fleet customers.

Vision Statement

The Alliance believes that electric vehicles will become the dominant choice of transportation for most customers and use cases in North America. Transportation electrification, including reliable and affordable infrastructure, will become ubiquitous across all states and geographies. ATE will continue to advance this vision through thought leadership and advocacy before state and provincial decision-makers to make this a tangible reality.
